7 Ways Entrepreneurs Can Improve Home Office Productivity

by Atlanta Mompreneur

I’m sure you experience days when you don’t feel productive at all. No matter what, you just can’t get as much done as you want.

If you’re anything like me, a mom entrepreneur working from home, you may also find it difficult to focus on the tasks at hand with the many distractions surrounding you.

Here are 7 ways to improve your productivity when you work from home:

  1. Designate a room or area in your home for your office. Keep your workspace totally separate from your living space. If possible, have a door to your office that you can shut when you need to strap in and get things done without distractions.

  2. De-clutter your home office. If you work from home, it’s likely you are trying to make the best out of  limited space. Get rid of what does not belong in your office, and only make space for the things you need to run your business. Some of the “things” I need include: comfortable office furniture, equipment, family photos, and inspirational quotes. Your list may be different. If so, that’s okay too. :)

  3. Begin each day with a plan. Keep your to-do realistic and manageable. One way to do this is to estimate the amount of time needed to complete each task on your to-do list. This will help you determine what you can accomplish within the time you have available that day.

  4. Schedule everything. Your tasks, meetings, phone conferences, homework with the kids, and cuddle time with your spouse. Schedule it all, and stick to your schedule.

  5. Log out of your email account. If you have a habit of checking your email account several times an hour, this tip is for you. Log out of your email account… immediately! Email can be one of the most counter-productive tools. Schedule a time (maybe 3-4 times a day) to check and respond to your emails.

  6. Limit unnecessary distractions. This means turn off the television. Mute the ringers on your cell phone. Log out of Twitter, Facebook and the forums you love to hang out and chat in. If you’ve followed my advice thus far, you have already scheduled time for Twitter and Facebook as a result of #4 above.

  7. Focus. It’s important that you remain focused on what you need to accomplish each day. This should be easier to do without the distractions you got rid of earlier. Take a moment to revisit your to-do list throughout the day in order to pace your productivity and get the most out of the time you have available.

There you have it… 7 productivity tips you can start implementing today!

From now on, instead of assuming there are not enough hours in the day, try to maximize the time you have available.

Do you have any productivity tips you’d like to share?
